How to Get Through Seasonal Depression

We’ve all hit that January-February slump that feels endless. It’s cold, dark, and gloomy, and those winter blues creep in. You start dragging in the mornings, complaining a little more, and everything just feels a bit… blah. Here’s how I keep myself out of that rut:

1. Stick to a Year-Round Routine

I know plenty of people who start the year with a solid routine—waking up early, working out, eating well—but when winter hits, it all goes out the window. Sure, it’s easier to get up when the sun is shining, but consistency is key. If you wake up at 6 a.m. in the summer, do the same in winter. A steady routine keeps you grounded, no matter how dreary the season.

2. Find Non-Screen Activities

Let’s face it—endless scrolling is a quick ticket to feeling blah. Spending hours on a screen drains your energy and can deepen the winter blues. Instead, swap your screen time with activities that recharge you. I love to read, so I stock up on books for the winter months. Find something that fills you up, whether it’s reading, painting, or picking up a winter hobby.

3. Move Every Day

It can feel tough to throw on workout gear when your cozy clothes are calling, but trust me—exercise is always worth it. A good sweat session boosts your energy and lifts your mood. Even a quick 15-minute workout can make a huge difference. Move every day, and let those winter blues melt away.

4. Get Outside

It’s easy to skip the outdoors in winter, but even a short walk in the fresh air can be a game-changer. Winter has its own beauty—don’t miss it by staying inside. Layer up, get some warm gloves, and enjoy a little outdoor time. You’ll feel more awake, and your mood will thank you.

5. Take Your Vitamin C and D

Seasonal depression is often tied to a lack of vitamin D, the “happy vitamin.” We get most of our vitamin D from sunlight, so supplementing during the winter months is key. And don’t forget vitamin C to keep your immune system strong! These aren’t an excuse to hibernate inside, though—make time for fresh air too.

Seasonal depression is so real, and trust me, I get it. But this winter, let’s not let them take us down. If it gets heavy, remember it will pass—the sun will be back, and so will your energy. Here’s to making it through with a little extra joy this year!
